Here are ten tips that help me with my blog writing.
1. Make your opinion known
People like blogs, they like blogs because they are written by people and not corporations. People want to know what people think, crazy as it sounds they want to know what you think. Tell them exactly what you think using the least amount of words possible.
2. Link like crazy.
Support your post with links to other web pages that are contextual to your post.
3. Write Less
Give the maximum amount of information with the least amount of words. Time is finite and people are infinitely busy. Blast your knowledge into the reader at the speed of sound.
4. 250 is enough
A long post is easier to forget and harder to get into. A short post is the opposite.
5. Make Headlines snappy
Contain your whole argument in your headline. Check out National newspapers to see how they do it.
6. Include bullet point lists
We all love lists, it structures the info in an easily digestible format.
7. Make your posts easy to scan
Every few paragraphs insert a sub heading. Make sentences and headlines short and to the point.
8. Be consistent with your style
People like to know what to expect, once you have settled on a style for your audience stick to it.
9. Litter the post with Keywords.
Think about what keywords people would use to search for your post and include them in the body text and headers. make sure the keyword placement is natural and does not seem out of place.
10. Edit your post
Good writing is in the editing. Before you hit the submit button, re-read your post and cut out the stuff that you don’t need
19Apr 08 by ben10lovurfan
1. Ask a Question
Opening your post with a question is a rhetorical device (hence, the “rhetorical question”) that creates curiosity and gets the reader thinking. Thinking equals active engagement with your writing, and that’s a very good thing.
2. Share an Anecdote or Quote
Anecdotes are quick stories that can make people laugh or immediately establish the main point of your post. A nice quote from a recognizable authority or famous person can also work wonders when holding attention in those crucial opening seconds.
3. Invoke the Mind’s Eye
Producing a mental image in a reader’s mind is one of the most powerful things you can ever do as a writer, so expressly engaging the imagination is a powerful opening technique. Activate the mind’s eye of the reader by using words like “imagine,” “picture this,” “do you remember when,” etc.
4. Use an Analogy, Metaphor or Simile
Analogies, metaphors and similes are some of the most powerful devices available when it comes to telling a story in a single sentence. This is a great way to capture a reader’s attention and also acts to provoke mental imagery that allows readers to tell a story to themselves.
5. Cite a Shocking Statistic
Starting off with an interesting factoid is also a great technique. People love being provided with interesting data, but only if it is unique, startling, or even shocking. The statistic should also be directly relevant to the point of your post as well.
Bonus Tip: The third most important part of your blog post is the closing. A great way to close is to tie back into your opening.

If you regularly visit blogs, you know that blog posts come in all shapes and sizes. Posts can be long, medium, or short (sometimes really short, like Jim Henley’s renowned one-word post that has collected 1104 comments to date). They go from the one extreme of dry and objective reports to the other extreme of unapologetic subjective, emotional, and opinionated rants.
If you look at lists of popular blogs, you’ll realize that very different types of content can attract a crowd of readers. The difference between a good and a not-so-good post is all in the execution.
There are many reasons why posts are interesting. Sometimes it’s the writing and the personality behind the writing. Sometimes it’s the ability to find and put together links to content that is interesting, or weird, or unusual. Sometimes it’s the ability to create community around your blog. It takes some experimenting to understand what type of blogger you are and what style matches your personality, motivation, and interest. So try different things and see how it feels.
You will find disparate opinions on what a good blog post. It’s OK. There are so many different reasons for blogging, and each reason requires a different type of posts. Do you blog just for your own enjoyment? Because writing makes you think more clearly? Do blog for a cause? Or to communicate with your friends? To make yourself known? To market your product or yourself? To make money? Depending on your reason, you’ll need a different focus.
If you just want to express yourself, a good post is a post you love writing and represents you unique voice. If the purpose is communication, social networking, and community, you need to write posts that create debate, connect people, are interesting to discuss, and speak to the community. If you want to get known, you need to express interesting opinions on interesting topics that can catch the attention of enough of the right people. If you want to market your product(s) or yourself you need to focus on communicating value to your prospective customers or clients. And so on.
In the end, a good post is a post that has value for you and/or your readers. We read posts to have fun, perhaps to learn something, discover something interesting, hear a different point of view.
Short and crisp posts are popular, because they require less effort to read (but not necessarily to write). It’s easier to grab the attention of your readers with a short post that to maintain it through a long post (read more on this topic) and it’s fun to jump from one short post to the next linked post again and again. On the other hand, long posts can be valuable and satisfying because they allow you to develop a topic, to create connections, and to present a different point of view.
Different styles of posts appeal to different people. You need to choose a style that matches yourself and your audience, and then get better at it with practice.
Whatever you do, try to be respectful of your readers. Provide value, don’t waste their time, put some care and attention in your writing, no matter how long/short, personal/objective, opinionated/balanced your posts are. Put some love in your blogging, and you’ll get some love back.
I’ve read many bloggers suggest “Post frequently, post every day.” It’s true that posting frequently can help increase traffic to your site. But in the end, it’s not the but the quality of the posts that creates loyal readers. I read many blogs that are not updated very frequently but are just a really good and stimulating reading. Blogs that post frequently but have few valuable posts are the most frustrating to me.
My suggestions is rather “Blog frequently, blog everyday.” Some posts require more than one day to become good. Sometimes I start to write a post and only a few days later I can tell what parts are good and what parts are bad, where there are holes, and what needs to be improved.
The great thing about of “customer-created content” is that we can create our own rules. Some blogs are immediate and spontaneous, and this is great. Other blog content takes time to create. Don’t get trapped in a predefined idea of how a blog post should look like. Take your time, put some practice into it, find your way, and most of all have fun.

- Limit yourself to one topic. Your entire set of interests is unlikely to be matched by anyone else’s. Just because you like knitting, web development with Flash, Abyssinian cats, and geocaching doesn’t mean there’s a good set of readers for a knitting-Flash-Abyssinian-geocaching blog. Pick one area and stray outside it at your popularity’s peril. It can be broad (web workerhood is pretty broad) but if it is, it should be a broadly popular topic too.
- Take a mainly objective stance towards the topic. Write like it could be out of a magazine. You might feel at first, pretending like you know what you’re talking about. But that’s what people expect.
- Eliminate the personal unless it is relevant to your topic. If you are interested in popularity rather personal expression, you shouldn’t be telling a whole lot of personal stories. What seems interesting and important to you about your own life probably isn’t all that interesting and important to your readers.
- But let your personality show. If you are a little bit cynical and snarky, write that way. If you are a good-hearted and sweet person, let that run through each of your posts. If you are a crotchety curmudgeon, go with that. Be yourself; just don’t talk too much about yourself.
- Think carefully about your headlines. I’m not a great headline writer yet–but I have realized their importance since beginning work on Web Worker Daily. With so many blogs competing for attention, you need to lure readers in and then fulfill whatever promise your headline holds. Check out Copyblogger’s 10 Sure-Fire Headline Formulas that Work for tips.
- Offer interesting links. This provides value to your reader way beyond what they get from just the words in your post. My most popular posts at Web Worker Daily have been those where I spent days or weeks collecting relevant links and then tied them all together into a comprehensive article. See 20 Different Ways to Manage Your To Dos and 10 New Ways to Make Money Online.
- Try writing list posts. Why do people like list posts so much? Maybe because they offer obvious value to the reader. They’re also easy to scan for important points and they force the writer to organize her thoughts. List posts are much less likely to be rambling than a typical essay-type post.
- Become a power commenter. On Web Worker Daily, we don’t need to do that to get attention. Instead, we have the power of GigaOmniMedia behind us. If you’re starting an individual blog, however, you’ll need to use different tactics. Build up a network one by one. Comment on posts you like. Reply to all comments you get. Read your commenters’ blogs.
- Learn from the greats. My favorite bloggers on blogging are Darren Rowse of ProBlogger and Brian Clark of CopyBlogger. Check out Kathy Sierra’s Creating Passionate Users for a unique blog that’s raucously popular. Also, seek out the most popular bloggers in your topic domain and try to analyze why they’re successful.
- Have fun! Your readers will be able to tell if you’re robotically following a list of tips from “how to make your blog popular” and your heart’s not in it. You need to love to write, to be passionate about the subject of your blog, and inspired by interactions with your commenters. It’s fun to write for a popular blog not because being popular is so fun in itself, but because it brings more of the same: more writing, more ideas, more people to interact with. So to wrap up… do it for fun, the popularity may follow.
